About WPI

Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is a STEM-focused university founded in 1865 and located in the heart of Massachusetts. We know students learn most effectively by taking theories and putting them into practice through interdisciplinary project work—hence our motto, lehr und kunst, or “theory and practice,“ and our status as a global leader in project based learning

That commitment to project-based learning led to the creation of the WPI Plan, our signature approach to education that’s been in place for over 50 years. The WPI Plan gives students the opportunity to address important scientific, technological, and societal problems as they complete the equivalent of a minor in Humanities and Arts and two major projects—both on campus and around the world.

… And what could be more hands-on and project-based than robotics! WPI’s involvement and passion for robotics doesn’t stop at the development of WPILib—we’re also the first university to offer BS, MS and PhD degrees in robotics engineering. We’re proud to have been a FIRST scholarship sponsor since 1996, and to offer two full-tuition scholarships to students involved in FIRST

There is more than robotics at WPI. There’s loads of exciting things happening on campus—but what makes WPI truly special is the people. With over 50 STEM-focused programs and majors, more than 235 students organizations and clubs, and a slew of events and activities, WPI offers plenty of ways for students to pursue their interests, discover new passions, develop leadership skills, and build lifelong friendships—both inside and outside the classroom
